It seems that all the hype about the best spinning bike is a lot of hype. The sales pitch is that it will take all the guesswork out of fitness training, that you won’t need to hire a personal trainer, and that it will save you hundreds of dollars. Is any of this really true, however?
Product Of The Flywheel
Spin cycles are the product of the flywheel that is so beloved in fitness circles. The best spinning bike, indoor or out, has a flywheel and has a transmission similar to an ordinary bike with pedals. Your pedaling position is identical to your pedaling position on a regular bicycle and the resistance level can be adjusted the same way you’d adjust gears on a bicycle. But do these systems really make the best use of your time and money?
Home Spin Bikes Do Have Benefits
These home spin bikes do have benefits. They’re easy to store if you don’t have room for a dedicated home spin bike. And if space is at a premium in your home, they won’t take up an area that’s too small. They’re also very low maintenance machines and you should never have to repair them. So yes, they do have an advantage over home use models.
But the biggest advantage of the bike as opposed to a home spin bike is the price. Whereas a home spin bike might cost you five hundred dollars, a high-end cycling bike (one that offers comparable resistance) can be bought for less than a hundred dollars. This huge price difference is made up in part by the technology used to drive the bike. Most cycling bikes today combine a flywheel with a transmission that uses a magnetic reed motor rather than wind power or gears.
Magnetic resistance is the main advantage of this type of bike. Magnetic resistance forces your pedals to move faster, which results in more energy being expended during each pedaling bout. This translates into more calories burned, and it also means that the exerciser will spend less time recovering from a hard workout. Compared to other indoor exercise bikes, the cost of this type of machine is nothing when compared to other, more traditional cycling machines. The best spin bike, in this regard, costs between forty-five and sixty U.S. dollars.
The best indoor cycling bikes also have one other major advantage over spinning machines. This is their ability to help strengthen and tone your muscles. When you spin on a regular bike, much of the stress on your legs and thighs is absorbed through your feet and lower body. But when you ride a stationary bike, the impact is distributed through your whole body, and you’re more likely to focus on strengthening the major muscle groups that are worked most often.
In addition to the above mentioned features, spin bikes also tend to come with adjustable handlebars. These handlebars offer a higher degree of versatility than standard handlebars, because they can be fully reclined for comfort or raised to provide more leverage. Some advanced models may even include an advanced “buzz” system that reduces resistance as the cyclist pulls on the handlebars. But all of this may be of little importance if the frame of the bike is poorly constructed or doesn’t have quality components. As a rule of thumb, it’s best to avoid bikes with poor construction, low quality seat materials and low-grade pedals.
